The Company:

EnergyRM is on a mission to unlock energy efficiency investment in commercial buildings. EnergyRM’s clean energy fintech platform helps building owners and infrastructure investors solve the longstanding landlord-tenant split incentive by monetizing energy efficiency investment with our investment-grade software and innovative financial structure.

It’s an exciting time at EnergyRM. We’re a venture-backed startup that’s getting a lot of attention. EnergyRM has superior tech and a great team. We’re poised to disrupt the energy efficiency market and make a big impact by helping commercial buildings reduce energy consumption.

The Job:

The Principal Full Stack Engineer is the head of EnergyRM’s Engineering function, and a leader across the company who has a deep understanding of the product, customer experience, and the drivers of revenue & profitability. As the Principal Engineer, you’ll work closely with our start-up’s leadership to identify opportunities that will optimize EnergyRM’s long term success. As the Principal Engineer, you will be expected to drive innovation across the technology function of our business.

Within the Engineering group, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of successful engineering strategies that scale alongside the changing needs of our customers, team, and business. You’ll be directly responsible for managing a department of engineers (both internal and contractors) that includes Front End, Backend, Infrastructure, Security, Data and QA Engineers.

In addition, you will mentor and lead engineers technically. You’ll do this by embracing our commitment to team health and learning+development by owning our infrastructure to help them run faster. You will also be expected to be an active driver of new ideas and innovation across these areas, leveraging your combined understanding of the customer experience, financial and technology drivers for our business.

About You:

You are a strong voice of the customer, a seasoned engineer, and a strategic and analytical technical leader with a vision who thrives in a dynamic, evolving environment. You have a proven track-record of ownership and responsibility for products within and across teams. You demonstrate a deep curiosity of technical drivers, and demand an understanding of the business outcomes tied to engineering projects. You have also demonstrated the ability to make very tough decisions that deal with large tradeoffs across financial drivers, customer experience, and platform improvements. When making these tradeoffs you have demonstrated the ability to communicate the criteria behind these decisions in an open, transparent way, and have gained the trust of your organization. Testing is a key part of your workflow, and you're always looking for ways to improve our confidence in software that we give to our customers. Most importantly, you're an engineer who is continuously learning and improving your craft.

What You’ll Do All Day:

  • Identify and influence organizational perspectives beyond technology.
  • Spend significant time pairing and mentoring Engineers, and Senior Engineers.
  • Modeling feedback and positive problem solving for multiple teams. Your contributions help shape cultural norms for Engineering and will require intentional actions. Know your limits and model curiosity with others on their expertise or perspective. Collaboration is key to demonstrating your skills.
  • Demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of not only EnergyRM’s tech, but expertise in other engineers’ chosen field of focus (mobile, backend service, frontend, etc).
  • Experiment and push our systems and capabilities further. As a Principal Engineer you are the one who does the heaviest work and can spearhead a crazy idea into fruition. Above all else your work is grounded in technical excellence for your chosen domain. You should also possess significant expertise in working across our domains, EnergyRM’s entire technology stack, and general engineering best practice.
  • This is a highly visible role and you should expect to be a regular participant in Engineering and Company presentations, highlighting key work and progress. Your ability to motivate others by example and tackle our biggest challenges becomes second nature to your individual leadership style. You will be expected to call out those engineers who are doing good work, and lift those accomplishments up so that the wider org is aware.
  • You have broad expertise with unique knowledge. You use skills to contribute to the development of company objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
  • You work on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles.
  • You exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. You create formal networks involving coordination among groups.
  • You act independently or within a team to determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments.
  • Lead the team to continuously improve the SDLC within a Kanban environment to maximize quality and velocity while delivering customer value through multiple concurrent projects, on time and within budget.
  • Ensure prompt responses to urgent issues that are client and revenue impacting within established SLAs.
  • Employ industry best practices to drive innovation, address technical debt, advance system architecture, and improve processes.
  • Actively contribute to technology selections and architectural direction.
  • Recruit and retain top-level talent to scale teams while maintaining performance, quality, and best practices.
  • Provide ongoing visibility to the CEO and senior leaders.

What we would like to see:

  • 10+ years of related and progressive technical experience. A combination of education and/or professional experience accepted.
  • Hands on experience architecting/developing mobile product lines within highly available, complex technical infrastructures.
  • Proficiency with at least some of our tech stack:

    • Backend: NodeJS (TypeScript) running Apollo GraphQL, TypeORM, and Bull
    • Cloud: AWS Aurora (PostgreSQL), AWS Fargate
    • CI/CD: GitHub Actions
  • 2+ years or strongly proficient in delivering products using Kanban or other agile frameworks.
  • Proven ability to articulate a long-term technical vision and roadmap to ensure sustainable business success.
  • Prior experience coordinating with Compliance/Info-Sec in a highly-regulated industry with routine audits, preferably PCI-DSS.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with both highly-technical teams and non-technical business leaders.
